Understanding Your Numbers

When you get testosterone lab results, the columns of values and reference ranges can be confusing. While your provider should always interpret them in context, knowing the key markers helps you have a more informed conversation about your health.

Total and Free Testosterone

Total testosterone measures all the testosterone in your blood, while free testosterone reflects the portion actually available to your body. It is possible to have a normal total level but low free testosterone, which is why both matter. Free testosterone often lines up more closely with how you feel.

SHBG and Estradiol

Sex hormone binding globulin, or SHBG, binds testosterone and lowers how much is free. Estradiol, a form of estrogen, is important even in men and needs to stay in balance. Looking at these together gives a fuller picture than testosterone alone.

Ranges Are Not the Whole Story

Standard reference ranges describe a broad population, not what is optimal for you. Two veterans with identical numbers can feel very differently. That is why good care combines lab data with your symptoms rather than treating a single value in isolation.
